"The well-being of our natural environment will determine our future"
– Don Smith

As the vice-chair of the Muskoka Watershed Advisory Group, Don knows the importance of the watershed and has contributed to recommendations to the province on both flood mitigation and water quality issues.

As a Town and District Councillor over the past two terms, I have:

  • Successfully campaigned for the removal of downtown parking meters.

  • Called for the creation of the Muskoka Housing Task Force and supported increased District funding for housing.

  • Supported community projects such as the creation of the downtown skating trail and the acquisition of the RONA property for future waterfront development.

  • Advocated for programs that have seen our businesses rebound from the impact of the COVID pandemic.

  • As vice chair of the Muskoka Watershed Advisory Group helped set out recommendations to address flooding and the quality of the water in our lakes and rivers.

  • Been a proponent of the Recognition of a Climate Emergency by both District and Town Councils.

  • Successfully introduced a proposal to keep Town taxes to a zero increase during the height of the COVID pandemic.

  • Been an advocate for the development of Muskoka Airport.

  • Have listened to ratepayers, one-on-one, and spoke on your behalf with Town and District staff as well as with other councillors.

Going forward, I am committed to:

  • Working with all levels of government to increase affordable housing in Muskoka.

  • Implementing the Town’s Key Priority of creating more public waterfront access by developing waterfront land, already owned by the Town, for public use by local residents and tourists.

  • Finding ways to open doors to the many workers in the trades, healthcare, tourism and other occupations who want to fill employment vacancies in Muskoka but can’t find adequate housing.

  • Getting the best value for your tax dollars.

  • Advocating for quality healthcare for Bracebridge residents and, in particular, supporting the process to see a new full-service acute care hospital built in Bracebridge as well as improved mental health services.

  • Continuing the efforts to modernize municipal government in Muskoka including the election of a District chair.

  • Maximizing the federal - provincial funding for daycare and reducing daycare wait lists.

  • Engaging both the community and all levels of government in addressing the root causes of mental health issues.

  • Fighting to have Muskoka returned to Northern Ontario status for the purpose of receiving provincial funding.

You can vote for three District councillors.
I’d be honoured, if you’d consider me to be one of your choices.
